Well, Hello!

Since the early nineties, Pawlie has been creating his original brand of acoustic/electric songs — drawing upon influences in the rock, pop, jazz, folk, and progressive genres. He has released four albums to date: Pawlie (1994), The Small Time (1998), Little Green Man (2011), and An Ape’s Progress (2021). Pawlie’s first Welsh-language single — Americanwr Balch — was released on March 29, 2024.

Originally hailing from England, Pawlie grew up on the east coast, in New England. He strummed his first guitar at age thirteen, and quickly became fascinated with all aspects of music composition, performance, and recording. This eventually led him to UC Santa Barbara, where he studied electrical engineering as a pathway to audio production.

In the late eighties, Pawlie pursued songwriting more deeply and started playing live at every opportunity. This led to his self-titled debut album in 1994 — recorded with a host of Santa Barbara musicians and produced by local audio genius Mark Casselman. Pawlie has a folk-rock feel, with songs on a range of subjects including justice, equality, mortality, environmentalism, love, and human nature (still a favorite topic).

Pawlie’s second album, The Small Time, followed in 1998. Recorded with an expanded cadre of local and LA musicians with the same production team, The Small Time digs deeper lyrically, and branches out musically. The title track deals with defining happiness and success on one’s own terms, while other songs deal with the loss of loved ones, the search for unflinching honesty, and the power of introspection.

Little Green Man, Pawlie’s third album, was a one-man effort — recorded and mixed in the summer of 2011 at Pawlie’s home studio. Lyrically intimate and revealing, the songs on Little Green Man deal with humanity, religion, restlessness, and self-reflection. Musically, Little Green Man explores new sonic flavors through its focused and individualistic recording approach.

Pawlie’s fourth album, An Ape’s Progress, was released on August 13, 2021. Co-produced with Santa Barbara producer/mixer extraordinaire Thom Flowers (Steve Perry, The Ataris), An Ape’s Progress features an all-star cast of musicians, and delivers ten new songs built around the central theme of Homo sapiens and its struggle to survive and evolve on its home planet.

Pawlie lives in Santa Barbara with his wife Libby, and their pampered feline, Penny.
